The word democracy is the most used word in Political Science. Democracy has been accepted as the best form of government; however, it has many challenges. Some of the challenges of democracy are following:
1.Growing economic and social inequalities among the people
In a democracy all the citizens have the right to vote and fight elections but when there is a possibility of only rich people have a chance to win the election. This creates inequalities among rich and poor people. The poor are sometimes even forced to sell their votes to fulfill their basic necessities of life like food, clothing and shelter. In Nepal, we see this as a major problem which is challenging for democracy
2.Role of anti-social elements
For strong democracy, elections must be held on the basis of universal, equal and secret suffrage so that all voters can choose their representatives in conditions of equality, openness and transparency that stimulate political competition.Voters are coerced to vote for a particular candidate or party by anti-social elements during election in Nepal.
3.Corruption and inefficiency
The increase in corruption level leads to a poor governance in country. People do not take interest in elections and have no faith in government officials. This affects the working of democracy in the country very badly.
Political parties are essential to the functioning and durability of democracy since they are not only the instruments through which power is attained by means of free, fair and transparent elections but also the setting for working out practical ideas and proposals which may constitute alternative programmes to the government. The effective role of an opposition party is also important in democracy.
5.Lack of rule of law
Democracy refers to the rule of law not by a rule of person. When ruling is made by person despite of law it leads towards a tyranny.
The government becomes despotic and fails to maintain responsiveness.
